Red Admiration — Red Gerbera Hand Bouquet
Large red gerbera daisies with clusters of red hypericum berries and a scatter of white baby’s breath, gathered in black wrapping paper with a red and silver ribbon. The black wrap does a lot of work here — red against black is considerably more striking than red against kraft, and it’s what turns a cheerful flower into something with presence.
Gerberas Aren’t Roses, and That’s the Point
Red roses declare romance unambiguously. Gerberas read differently: bright, open, generous and cheerful rather than intense. The flower itself — the Transvaal daisy, native to South Africa — has an almost graphic quality, with a perfectly round head and evenly radiating petals that photographs beautifully.
That difference matters when you’re choosing. If you want the message to be unmistakably romantic, roses. If you want something bold and warm that won’t read as a declaration, gerberas do the job with more personality — which is why they work equally well for a graduation, a promotion, a birthday or an anniversary.
What’s in the Bouquet
- Red gerberas — large open blooms with the flower’s characteristic round, radiating form
- Red hypericum berries — glossy clustered berries adding texture and depth between the flowers, and the longest-lasting element in the bouquet
- White baby’s breath — the fine filler that lifts the red and stops the arrangement reading as solid
- Black paper wrap with red and silver ribbon
- Complimentary message card — write your message at checkout and our florists will hand-write it
Caring for Gerberas — They’re Particular
Gerberas need different handling from most cut flowers, and getting it wrong is why people think they don’t last. Two things matter more than anything else:
- Use shallow water — 3 to 5cm, not a full vase. This is counterintuitive but important. Gerbera stems are highly prone to bacterial blockage, and the more stem sitting in water, the faster it rots and the sooner the head droops. Shallow water, changed daily, will roughly double their life
- Support the necks. Gerbera stems are hollow and weak, so heads flop at the neck within a day or two. Our florists insert supports before delivery, but if a head starts to bend at home, slide a drinking straw over the stem or run a length of florist wire up the inside
- Change the water daily and rinse the vase — every day, not every two, for gerberas specifically
- Re-trim every couple of days at a sharp angle
- Keep away from aircon vents, direct sun and fruit bowls. Ethylene gas from ripening fruit ages flowers quickly
The hypericum berries will outlast the gerberas comfortably — once the flowers fade, the berry stems and baby’s breath still make a respectable smaller arrangement, and both dry well.
Best Suited For
- Anniversaries — bold and warm without the formality of red roses
- Birthdays — gerberas are among the most cheerful flowers there are
- Graduations and congratulations — bright, celebratory and photograph well against a gown; see our graduation bouquets
- New jobs and promotions — celebratory rather than romantic, so safe for colleagues
- Get well — the round open faces are genuinely cheering in a hospital room
- Just because — arguably the best occasion for a gerbera bouquet
What the Colours Mean
Gerberas broadly signify cheerfulness and innocence, which is much of their appeal. Red gerberas specifically carry associations with love, admiration and deep appreciation — bold rather than tender. The white baby’s breath adds a note of sincerity and everlasting affection, which is why it appears in almost every romantic bouquet made.
