Fresh Roses, Dried Lavender — Two Different Lifespans

This is worth explaining, because it’s genuinely unusual. Most bouquets are uniformly fresh, so everything fades on roughly the same schedule. This one isn’t: the roses are cut fresh and will last 5 to 7 days like any other rose bouquet, but the lavender is dried, and dried lavender doesn’t wilt, doesn’t need water, and will hold its colour and shape for months.

That means the bouquet has a second life. Once the roses have finished, the lavender stems can be pulled out, gathered, and kept as their own small dried arrangement — on a shelf, in a vase with no water, or simply tied and hung. It’s a small thing, but it’s a genuine point of difference from a bouquet that’s simply thrown out once the flowers go.

Black wrapping paper is a departure from the usual kraft or pastel wrap, and it changes the register of the bouquet: less soft and romantic, more striking and considered. It’s a good choice for someone who finds the conventional red rose bouquet a little predictable.

How to Keep Them Fresh

1. Unwrap and trim the roses. Cut 2–3cm off each stem at a 45° angle under running water.
2. Use clean, cool water and change it every two days, rinsing the vase each time.
3. Strip submerged leaves. Anything below the waterline rots and clouds the water.
4. Keep the lavender out of the water if you can — dried stems in a wet vase will eventually soften and mould. If it’s arranged together with the fresh flowers, that’s fine for the bouquet’s normal life; just be aware the lavender will fare better once separated and dried out again.
5. Keep away from aircon vents, direct sun and fruit bowls. Ethylene gas from ripening fruit ages fresh flowers quickly, though it won’t affect the dried lavender.
