Caring for Gerberas — They’re Particular

Gerberas need different handling from most cut flowers, and getting it wrong is why people think they don’t last:

1. Use shallow water — 3 to 5cm, not a full vase. Gerbera stems block with bacteria faster than almost any other cut flower, and the more stem submerged, the sooner the head droops. Change that shallow water daily
2. Support the necks. Gerbera stems are hollow and structurally weak, so heads flop at the neck. If one starts bending at home, slide a drinking straw over the stem or run florist wire up the inside
3. Re-trim every couple of days at a sharp angle
4. Keep away from aircon vents, direct sun and fruit bowls. Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which ages flowers quickly

Done properly, gerberas hold for about a week. The pink poms and baby’s breath will outlast the gerberas comfortably.
