Split-Leaf Philodendron vs Monstera

The two most confused plants in tropical interiors. Here's how to tell which one you actually want:

Split-Leaf PhilodendronMonstera Deliciosa
Leaf shapeCut into deep lobes all the way to the edgeMostly solid with holes through the middle
SilhouetteJagged, feathered, finger-likeBroad and smooth-edged
Effect in a roomDramatic and architecturalSofter, more graphic
Botanical nameThaumatophyllum bipinnatifidumMonstera deliciosa

Both are sold under overlapping common names, and listings across the internet mix them up freely. If you're matching a reference photo, look for holes: holes mean monstera.

Why People Choose Artificial Philodendron

Beyond the maintenance question, two practical reasons come up repeatedly. Real philodendrons are toxic to cats and dogs, which rules them out of a lot of Singapore homes. And real selloum grows genuinely large — well past two metres across — which is a wonderful thing in a garden and a difficult one in an apartment. An artificial specimen gives you the leaf shape at the scale you actually want, permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a split-leaf philodendron or a monstera?

A split-leaf philodendron. Its leaves are cut into deep lobes all the way to the edge, giving a jagged, finger-like outline. Monstera deliciosa has broad, mostly solid leaves with holes punched through the middle. If you're matching a photo, look for holes — holes mean monstera.

Is it safe around pets and children?

Yes. Real philodendrons contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs, and an irritant to children who chew leaves. This artificial version contains none of that, which makes it a common choice for pet owners, families, clinics, childcare centres and pet-friendly F&B. As with any décor item, it isn't a toy and shouldn't be chewed.

How tall is it, and how wide does it spread?

Approximately 4ft (120cm) including the pot, with an 80–90cm spread. The wire-cored stems let you angle each leaf independently, so the spread can be narrowed for a tight alcove or opened out to fill a corner.

Why not just buy a real one?

Two reasons beyond maintenance. It's toxic to pets, and it gets very large — real selloum spreads well past two metres across in good conditions, developing a thick trunk and shedding lower leaves. That's impressive outdoors and impractical in most Singapore apartments. This version stays exactly the size you bought.

Does it come with a decorative pot?

It's supplied in a weighted black nursery pot designed to drop straight into a decorative planter without repotting. A 30–35cm diameter planter is the right fit — browse our planter range.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth every few weeks. Broad leaves show dust much more than fine foliage does, so this matters more here than on a palm or fern. Avoid oil-based furniture polish — it attracts dust and dulls the matte finish.

Can I use it outdoors in Singapore?

It suits sheltered semi-outdoor positions such as covered balconies, verandas and roofed walkways. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage, so fully exposed positions aren't recommended. Ask about UV-stabilised outdoor-grade options for open-air projects.

Do you offer bulk or corporate pricing?

Yes. We supply offices, hotels, clinics, retail chains, F&B operators and developers across Singapore, with volume pricing, planter matching, on-site installation and optional scheduled maintenance. Contact us with your quantities and we'll quote within one working day.
