Artificial Zebra Plant (Calathea ornata) — 40cm
Let’s be honest about the real thing. Calathea ornata has a reputation among Singapore plant owners for a reason: it wants high humidity, filtered or distilled water, bright indirect light and absolutely no aircon draught. Give it tap water and the leaf edges brown within weeks. Put it in a dim corner and the pink pinstripes fade out entirely. It is one of the most commonly bought and most commonly killed houseplants on the market.
This is that plant, without the failure rate. 40cm tall, broad deep-green leaves streaked with pink pinstripes and rich maroon undersides — holding its colour in a windowless meeting room, on a shaded shelf, or anywhere the real one would have quietly given up.
What You Get
- 40cm overall height including the pot, with a 30–35cm leaf spread
- Polyester fabric leaves with printed pinstripe variegation and moulded midribs
- Maroon leaf undersides — the detail cheaper versions skip, and the one that reads as authentic when leaves catch the light
- Wire-cored stems that can be angled and fanned to adjust the silhouette
- Plain black planter with the stems fixed in artificial soil — designed to sit inside a decorative pot
Where 40cm Actually Fits
Forty centimetres is the size most people under-buy or over-buy. It’s too tall for a bathroom shelf and too short to anchor a room corner, but it is exactly right for the middle ground:
- Office desks — tall enough to be seen over a monitor, short enough not to block a colleague
- Reception counters — a single accent, or three in a row along a long counter
- Console and sideboard tops — pairs well with a lamp and a frame in a three-object grouping
- Bookshelf gaps — the classic use for a plant this height
- Dining and coffee tables — low enough that people can see each other across it
- Café and retail displays — colour on a counter with nothing for staff to remember
Why Artificial Makes Particular Sense for This Species
With a hardy plant like a snake plant, artificial is a convenience choice. With Calathea, it’s closer to the only practical option in most Singapore interiors. Air-conditioning strips the humidity Calathea depends on; Singapore’s treated tap water is exactly the sort it reacts badly to; and the low-light corners people actually want to decorate are the ones where its variegation disappears fastest.
You also avoid the quieter problems: no soil gnats around a desk, no water rings on a veneer console, no leaf litter for cleaners, no pollen — which makes it viable for clinics, childcare centres and anywhere allergies are a consideration.
Styling Notes
Buy in threes. One 40cm plant on a long counter or shelf looks stranded. Three at staggered intervals reads as intentional styling, and it’s the single easiest thing you can do to make faux greenery look considered.
Pot it up. The black nursery pot is functional. A ceramic, concrete or woven planter around 15–18cm in diameter transforms it — browse our planter range.
Fan the leaves on arrival. Stems are compressed for transit. Spread them outward and vary the angles rather than leaving them bunched upright — bunching is the main reason artificial plants read as fake.
Cover the base. A handful of moss, bark chips or river pebbles over the artificial soil removes the last visible tell.
Care
Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks, or dust with a soft brush. Avoid oil-based furniture sprays — they attract dust and dull the leaf finish. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight, which will eventually fade any printed variegation. Indoors, expect it to look the same in five years as it does on day one.
