Artificial Zebra Plant — 90cm (Aphelandra)
Large, pointed, glossy dark green leaves marked with bold white veining in a striking striped pattern — this is Aphelandra squarrosa, the botanical zebra plant. At 90cm it works equally well as a substantial tabletop feature or a smaller floor accent, and the leaf pattern is bold enough to hold its own from across a room.
Which “Zebra Plant” Do You Mean?
Worth clarifying, because the name is used for three unrelated plants and listings across the internet rarely distinguish them:
- This plant — Aphelandra squarrosa — dark green leaves with bold white-to-silver veining in a striped pattern, and (on real specimens) an occasional bright yellow bracted flower spike
- The pinstripe calathea — Calathea ornata, with fine pink pinstripes rather than white and a softer, more delicate leaf. See our artificial Calathea zebra plant
- The zebra succulent — Haworthiopsis fasciata, a small spiky rosette with horizontal white banding, nothing like either of the above
If you’re matching a specific photo, look at the leaf shape: broad and pointed with vein-following stripes means this plant; fine pink pinstripes on a softer leaf means the Calathea; a small spiky succulent rosette means neither.
Why Artificial — This Species Especially
Aphelandra squarrosa has a reputation as one of the more difficult common houseplants to keep. It demands consistently moist (never soggy) soil, high humidity and bright indirect light, and it punishes any inconsistency by dropping its lower leaves rapidly — often within days of a single missed watering or a spell of dry air. In an air-conditioned Singapore interior, where humidity swings are constant and watering routines are rarely perfectly consistent, real specimens frequently decline within weeks of purchase.
This artificial version reproduces the same bold striped leaf pattern with none of that fragility. It holds its form and colour indefinitely, in any light level, with no watering schedule to maintain.
Construction & Detail
- Individually moulded leaves with embossed veining reproducing the plant’s characteristic white stripe pattern
- Glossy finish matching the naturally waxy leaf surface of the real plant
- Brown-toned stems rising from a central base
- Round pot base for stability at either tabletop or floor scale
Where It Works
- Console tables and sideboards — bold enough to anchor a surface on its own
- Desks and reception counters — striking pattern visible at close range
- Small floor corners — where a 5ft plant would overwhelm but the space wants more than a small pot plant
- Offices — part of our office artificial plant programme
- Clinics and childcare — no pollen, no soil, no watering rounds for staff
Styling Notes
Let the pattern do the work. This plant doesn’t need much company — a single specimen on a console or desk is often more effective than crowding it with other greenery.
Pot it up. A simple ceramic planter, 20–25cm, complements the graphic leaf pattern without competing with it — browse our planter range.
Angle a few leaves outward on arrival rather than leaving them all upright — this opens the crown and shows more of the striped pattern from a standing viewpoint.
Care & Longevity
Wipe the leaves with a soft dry cloth every few weeks. Avoid oil-based furniture sprays, which dull the glossy finish. Kept indoors, expect years of service with no colour change.
Outdoor Use
Suitable for sheltered outdoor positions such as covered balconies and verandas. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage.
