Artificial Syngonium (Nephthytis) — 45cm
Arrowhead-shaped leaves in variegated cream and green, held on a compact plant at 45cm — genuinely useful scale for a desk, shelf or side table where a full floor plant would overwhelm the space. The variegation pattern gives it more visual interest than a plain green tabletop plant, without being as dramatic or attention-seeking as a large-leaf statement piece.
Syngonium or Nephthytis? A Note on the Name
Worth clarifying, since this is a genuinely confused pair of names in the plant trade. Syngonium podophyllum — the arrowhead vine, native to Central and South America — is the plant most commonly sold under this description: arrowhead-shaped leaves, often variegated, that mature into a climbing or trailing vine. Nephthytis is a separate, related genus native to tropical West Africa, with similarly shaped arrowhead leaves growing from a rhizome rather than a vine.
The two are frequently sold under each other’s name because the young, compact form of Syngonium looks very similar to Nephthytis — both are aroids with the same basic leaf shape, and the difference is mostly in mature growth habit rather than the young foliage most people actually see. If you’re comparing listings and the name seems inconsistent between sellers, that’s why.
Why Artificial Works Well for This Plant
Real Syngonium is an easy-going plant in principle, but it’s also an aroid — meaning it’s mildly toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, and it wants consistently moist (not soggy) soil to avoid the yellowing and leaf drop it’s prone to when watering is inconsistent. In an office or a household with pets, those are two genuine reasons to prefer the artificial version, which reproduces the same variegated leaf pattern with neither risk.
