Getting the Height Right

The most common mistake with floor plants is buying one size too small — a plant that looks substantial in a showroom shrinks once it's in a room with a sofa, a wall and a ceiling around it. But the opposite mistake is just as common: buying a 5ft plant for a spot beside a sofa, where it towers over anyone sitting down.

HeightWorks for
Under 60cmDesks, shelves, counters, coffee tables
100cm (this plant)Beside sofas and armchairs, on sideboards, in alcoves and bays, under low ceilings
150cm / 5ftEmpty room corners, doorway flanks, lobbies, open-plan spaces
Over 2mDouble-height spaces, atriums, screening

A useful rule: choose a plant that reaches roughly two-thirds of the vertical space you want to fill. Next to a standard sofa back, that's about a metre.

Broad Leaves Indoors

The appeal of a plant like the Skybird is the leaf — large, waxy paddles held on long stems. It's one of the few forms that reads as tropical and architectural at the same time, which is why it appears in interiors that would look overdressed with a palm.

The catch with living broadleaf tropicals is light. They need hours of bright indirect sun to hold their form, and without it the leaves split, brown at the edges and eventually stop replacing themselves. In most Singapore interiors that's a losing proposition — which is what makes the artificial version unusually worthwhile for this leaf type specifically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is it, and does that include the pot?

Approximately 100cm (3.3ft) from the base of the pot to the top of the tallest leaf, with a 60–70cm spread. Wire-cored stems make the spread adjustable — fan the leaves wide or lift them for a narrower footprint.

Should I choose 100cm or 220cm?

Measure the gap. Under 70cm of width, or if the plant will sit beside existing furniture, choose 100cm — it reads at seated eye level rather than towering over it. For a double-height space, atrium or lobby you want the plant to command, choose the 220cm version.

Does it come with a decorative pot?

It's supplied in a weighted black nursery pot designed to drop into a decorative planter without repotting. A 25–30cm diameter planter is the right fit — browse our planter range.

Will it look right in a room with low ceilings?

Yes — this is one of the few tropical-leaf plants that suits standard HDB and older condo ceilings. At a metre it fills the space beside furniture without crowding the room, where a 5ft plant under a 2.4m ceiling can look compressed.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth every few weeks. Broad leaves show dust far more than fine foliage does, so this matters more here than on a palm. Avoid oil-based furniture polish — it attracts dust and dulls the matte finish.

How do I set it up on arrival?

The leaves ship compressed. Fan the stems outward so leaves sit at varied heights and face different directions, and angle a few of the lower ones downward. It takes a couple of minutes and makes a substantial difference to how natural it looks.

Can I use it outdoors in Singapore?

It suits sheltered semi-outdoor positions such as covered balconies, verandas and roofed walkways. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage, so fully exposed positions aren't recommended. Ask about UV-stabilised outdoor-grade options for open-air projects.

Do you offer bulk or corporate pricing?

Yes. We supply offices, hotels, clinics, retail chains, F&B operators and developers across Singapore, with volume pricing, planter matching, on-site installation and optional scheduled maintenance. Contact us with your quantities and we'll quote within one working day.
