Artificial Podocarpus Hanging Plant — One-Sided (Flat Back)
What “One-Sided” Means, and Why It Matters
A standard hanging plant is built in the round — foliage projecting evenly in every direction, designed to be seen from all sides in a suspended basket. A one-sided plant is built flat on the back and full on the front.
That’s a specification, not a compromise. It means the bush sits flush against a wall, a green wall frame, a shelf edge or a planter rim, with no awkward gap and no foliage crushed out of shape behind it. It also means units tile neatly beside each other — the difference between a green wall that reads as a continuous surface and one that reads as separate plants bolted to a board.
If you’re mounting to a vertical surface, one-sided is correct every time. If you’re suspending from a ceiling where the back will be visible, choose a full-round hanging plant instead.
The Foliage
Two textures in a single unit. The trailing element is podocarpus — soft, flattened, needle-like leaves in whorled clusters, deep green and fine-textured. Through the upper spread sit broader fern fronds, which open the silhouette and stop the bush reading as a solid mass.
That mix matters more than it sounds. A green wall built from one leaf type looks manufactured no matter how good the individual foliage is; the eye picks up the repeat across a large surface almost immediately. A unit that already carries two textures does half that work for you.
Dimensions: approximately 60cm drop × 50cm wide, with stems that can be separated, fanned and layered to adjust coverage.
Podocarpus — 罗汉松, the Buddhist Pine
Worth knowing what you’re buying. Podocarpus macrophyllus is known in Chinese as 罗汉松 (luó hàn sōng), the Buddhist pine, and it carries real cultural weight across Singapore and the wider region. It’s associated with longevity, endurance and prosperity, and mature specimens are a familiar sight flanking the entrances of homes, temples and businesses.
Part of that status comes from scarcity: podocarpus grows slowly, so a large specimen represents decades of cultivation and prices accordingly. It’s one of the reasons artificial podocarpus is specified far more often here than the plain foliage would suggest — the plant means something, and the meaning survives the substitution.
Where It’s Used
- Green walls and vertical gardens — the primary application. Tile across a frame for continuous coverage; see our green wall service
- Planter and trough skirting — draped over the rim to soften a hard edge and hide the container
- Shelf and cabinet edges — trailing foliage down the face of a unit
- Pillars, columns and trellises — wrapped and secured for vertical greening
- Beam and ledge cladding — softening structural elements in F&B and retail interiors
- Entrance features — where podocarpus in particular carries the right associations for a business frontage
- Events and weddings — backdrop walls, arch dressing and photo-wall infill; see our wedding décor range
Installation Notes
Overlap, don’t abut. Butting units edge to edge leaves visible seams. Overlap each by 15–20% so foliage from one breaks the line of the next — this single technique is most of the difference between a professional green wall and an obviously assembled one.
Vary the orientation. Rotating alternate units breaks up any repeating pattern, which the eye catches quickly across a large surface.
Mix leaf types. Combine this with two or three other foliage varieties — our one-sided hanging plant range is designed to be mixed.
Fix through the base. Cable ties, wire or staples through the stem base into mesh or timber. Don’t rely on adhesive — it fails in Singapore humidity.
Budget generously. Because of the overlap, allow roughly 20% more units than a straight area division suggests. Send us dimensions and we’ll calculate coverage.
Care
Dust every few months with a soft brush, a feather duster or a cool-setting hairdryer. For larger installations we offer scheduled cleaning as part of our maintenance contracts. No pollen, no soil and nothing to water — which is why these are specified in clinics, childcare centres and food premises where live planting isn’t practical.
Outdoor Use
Suitable for sheltered semi-outdoor positions such as covered walkways, balconies and roofed entrances. For exposed outdoor walls, ask us about UV-stabilised outdoor-grade foliage — standard grade will fade under prolonged direct sun, and specifying correctly at the outset costs far less than replacing a faded wall.
Project & Bulk Supply
Craftway Floral has supplied artificial greenery to Singapore’s design and construction trade since 1990. We quote by area, supply to site, install and maintain — for offices, hotels, retail, F&B, showrooms, developers and event builders. Send us a photo, a dimension or a drawing and we’ll return a unit count and price.
