Artificial Philodendron Selloum — 120cm
Large, deeply lobed leaves in a hand-like shape, rising from a brown coir-textured central stem to approximately 120cm. Philodendron selloum — now more correctly classified as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, though still almost universally sold under the older name — is one of the most recognisable broadleaf silhouettes in tropical planting: deep, finger-like lobes cut nearly to the leaf’s centre vein, giving it a dramatic, architectural presence even at moderate scale.
Split-Leaf Philodendron or Monstera?
Worth clarifying, since the two are constantly confused. This plant’s leaves are cut into deep lobes all the way to the leaf edge — a jagged, feathered outline with no enclosed holes. Monstera deliciosa has broader, mostly solid leaves with holes punched through the middle (fenestrations), and a smoother overall silhouette. If you’re matching a reference photo, look for holes — holes mean monstera, not selloum.
Why Artificial Makes Sense for This Species
Real Philodendron selloum is toxic to cats and dogs — like most aroids, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and throat if chewed, which matters given it’s typically placed at floor height within easy reach of pets.
It’s also a plant that doesn’t stay compact. Given the right conditions, real selloum spreads well past two metres across, developing a thick trunk and shedding lower leaves as it matures — impressive in a garden, considerably less practical in a Singapore living room or office. This artificial version holds the leaf shape and scale you actually want, permanently, with neither the toxicity risk nor the eventual sprawl.
Construction & Detail
- Individually moulded leaves with embossed midribs and deep, accurately cut lobes
- Coir-textured central stem, replicating the natural fibrous trunk of a mature specimen
- Wire-cored leaf stalks allowing each leaf to be angled independently
- Matte foliage finish
- Round plastic pot base
Where It Works
- Living rooms — beside a sofa or filling a corner without an overwhelming footprint
- Offices and receptions — broad leaves screen effectively at moderate height; part of our office artificial plant programme
- Clinics and childcare — no toxicity, no pollen, no soil
- Households with cats or dogs — the safe alternative to a genuinely toxic real plant
Styling Notes
Stagger the leaves. Real selloum leaves emerge in an alternating spiral rather than a flat fan. Rotate the stems so leaves sit at different heights and face different directions for a fuller, more natural crown.
Pot it up in a ceramic, concrete or rattan planter around 25–30cm — browse our planter range.
Care
Wipe the leaves with a soft dry cloth every few weeks — broad leaves show dust readily. Avoid oil-based furniture sprays. Kept indoors, expect years of service with no colour change.
Outdoor Use
Suitable for sheltered outdoor positions such as covered balconies and verandas. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage.
