Why Real Fatsia Struggles in Singapore

Fatsia japonica is unusual among the plants we replicate — it's genuinely shade-tolerant, so low light indoors isn't what defeats it. The problem is heat: Fatsia is a cool-climate coastal woodland plant, and sustained tropical warmth stresses it, making it a target for spider mites in exactly the dry, air-conditioned air most Singapore interiors provide. Real specimens here tend to look tired within months regardless of how carefully they're placed.

A Different Kind of Statement Leaf

Most large indoor foliage in Singapore reads as tropical — palms, monstera, bird of paradise. Fatsia's bold, deeply lobed leaf shape reads differently: architectural and slightly graphic, which makes it a useful counterpoint in a scheme that already has plenty of tropical greenery, or a strong single statement in a modern, minimal interior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose artificial over a real Japanese Aralia?

Fatsia japonica actually tolerates low light well — that's not the issue. The problem is heat: it's a cool-climate plant that struggles with sustained tropical warmth, and it's prone to spider mites in air-conditioned indoor air. Real specimens in Singapore tend to look tired within months. This version holds its bold leaf shape indefinitely with no such vulnerability.

How tall is it, and how wide does it spread?

Approximately 170cm including the pot, with a 90–100cm spread. The leaf stalks can be angled to open the crown fully or pull it in for a tighter footprint.

Does it come with a decorative pot?

It's supplied in a round plastic pot designed to drop into a decorative planter without repotting. A 30–35cm ceramic or concrete planter suits the bold leaf shape well — browse our planter range.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth every few weeks — the broad glossy leaves show dust readily. Avoid oil-based furniture polish, which attracts dust and dulls the finish.

Can I use it outdoors in Singapore?

It suits sheltered outdoor positions such as covered balconies, verandas and roofed walkways. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage, so fully exposed positions aren't recommended.
