Artificial Areca Palm — 5ft Floor Plant
At five feet, a palm stops being an accent and starts being architecture. This is the height where a plant reads from the doorway, holds a corner on its own, and gives a room the vertical line that furniture alone can’t. The fronds are pinnate — feather-form, with dozens of narrow leaflets along a central rib — rising in the arching, multi-caned habit of a real Dypsis lutescens rather than a single moulded trunk.
It’s the most-specified plant in Singapore commercial interiors for a straightforward reason: an areca palm looks tropical without looking themed, and 5ft fits under almost every standard ceiling while still reading as substantial.
4ft or 5ft?
| 4ft | 5ft | |
|---|---|---|
| Best position | Beside a sofa, armchair or console | Room corner, doorway flank, lobby |
| Visual role | Accent alongside furniture | Anchors the corner on its own |
| Ceiling | Any, including low HDB ceilings | Standard 2.6m and above |
| Spread | 70–80cm | 80–90cm |
If you’re unsure, measure the gap you’re filling. Under 80cm wide, take the 4ft. A full corner, or anything you want visible from across an open-plan space, takes the 5ft.
The Honest Case for Artificial
Real areca palms are among the most bought and most quietly abandoned plants in Singapore homes. The failure pattern is consistent: brown crispy frond tips from low indoor humidity and treated tap water; spider mites, which thrive in air-conditioning and are genuinely miserable to clear from feathered foliage; and slow thinning in any corner without bright indirect light. A living areca in a north-facing corner is usually on a two-year clock.
This holds its shape and colour indefinitely — in a windowless meeting room, a shaded lobby corner, or a stairwell nobody can reach with a watering can.
Construction & Detail
- Individually formed leaflets rather than a single moulded frond sheet — the difference shows at conversational distance and in photographs
- Multi-cane construction from a low crown, replicating the clumping growth habit of a real areca
- Wire-cored fronds that arch, lift and splay to build a natural crown rather than a flat upright fan
- Matte foliage finish — gloss is the single biggest giveaway in artificial palms
- Weighted pot base for stability in corridors, doorways and near air-con outlets
Where 5ft Works
- Room corners — the classic use; fills dead vertical space no furniture can occupy
- Hotel lobbies and receptions — pairs flanking a desk or entrance read as deliberate design
- Offices — screening between desk banks, softening meeting room glass; part of our office artificial plant programme
- F&B interiors — dividing seating zones without building a partition
- Clinics and waiting areas — no pollen, no soil, no watering rounds for staff
- Behind and beside sofas — filling the gap between seat back and wall
- Events and weddings — clusters frame aisles, stages and photo backdrops; see our wedding décor range
- Sheltered balconies and covered walkways — away from prolonged direct sun and driving rain
Styling Notes
Build the crown before you place it. Palms ship compressed. Lift every frond, curve it outward, and set them at staggered heights and angles. Five minutes of this transforms how the plant reads — a palm with all fronds standing upright looks artificial from across a room, and the same plant properly arched doesn’t.
Pot it up. The black nursery pot is functional, not decorative. A ceramic, rattan, concrete or fibreglass planter around 35–40cm in diameter is the finishing move — browse our planter range.
Dress the base. Moss, bark chips or river pebbles over the artificial soil removes the last visible tell.
Pair for entrances, single for corners. Two flanking a doorway or reception desk look intentional. In a room corner, one is correct — a pair in the same corner looks like stock.
Layer, don’t match. Set a 2.5ft or 3ft plant beside it rather than a second 5ft. Uneven heights read as a collection; matched heights read as a display.
Care & Longevity
Dust with a soft dry cloth or feather duster every few weeks. A cool-setting hairdryer clears dust from between fine leaflets faster than wiping. Avoid oil-based furniture sprays — they attract dust and dull the matte finish. Kept indoors, expect years of service with no colour change.
Outdoor Use
Suitable for sheltered semi-outdoor positions such as covered balconies, verandas and roofed walkways. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage, so fully exposed positions aren’t recommended. For open-air projects, ask us about UV-stabilised outdoor-grade palms.
