Choosing an Artificial Palm in Singapore
Two things separate a convincing artificial palm from an obvious one, and neither is price. The first is leaflet construction — individually formed leaflets catch light the way real fronds do, while a single moulded frond sheet reads flat from any angle. The second is how you set it up. Palms ship compressed, and most people place them straight out of the box with every frond pointing upward. Spend five minutes arching the fronds outward at varied heights and the same plant looks entirely different.
Feather Palms vs Fan Palms
Worth knowing when you're shopping: feather palms (pinnate) like areca, kentia and parlour palms have fronds made of many narrow leaflets along a central rib — light, arching and layered. Fan palms (palmate) like Livistona and the classic fan palm have broad, pleated, circular leaves. They create very different effects, and the terms are frequently mixed up in product listings. How tall is it, and does that include the pot?
Approximately 4ft (120cm) measured from the base of the pot to the top of the tallest frond, with a 70–80cm spread. Because the stems are wire-cored, the spread is adjustable — arch the fronds wide to fill a broad corner, or lift them for a narrower footprint.
Is it a feather palm or a fan palm?
A feather palm. The fronds are pinnate — many narrow leaflets running either side of a central rib, giving the light, arching effect of an areca or parlour palm. Fan palms have broad, pleated, circular leaves and create a very different look.
Why choose artificial over a real areca palm?
Real areca palms in Singapore homes commonly develop brown, crispy frond tips from low indoor humidity and treated tap water, attract spider mites in air-conditioned rooms, and thin out in any corner without bright indirect light. It suits sheltered semi-outdoor positions such as covered balconies, verandas and roofed walkways. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage, so fully exposed positions aren't recommended. Ask us about UV-stabilised outdoor-grade palms for open-air projects.
How do I clean it?
Dust with a soft dry cloth or feather duster every few weeks. A cool-setting hairdryer is the easiest way to clear dust from between fine leaflets. Avoid oil-based furniture polish — it attracts dust and dulls the matte finish.
How is it delivered, and does it need assembling?
Palms are delivered with the fronds folded to protect the leaflets in transit. On arrival, lift each frond and arch it outward at varied heights to build the crown. This takes a few minutes and makes a substantial difference to how natural it looks. Installation can be arranged for corporate and multi-unit orders.
