Artificial Dracaena Marginata ‘Green’ — 5ft Dragon Tree
Five feet of height in barely two feet of floor space. The dragon tree carries its foliage in distinct tiered crowns along a slender woody trunk, each crown a fountain of long, narrow, arching leaves. It’s a sculptural silhouette rather than a mass of greenery — which is exactly why it works where broader plants don’t.
Why the Narrow Footprint Matters
It’s the plant for the gap beside a wardrobe, the strip behind a door that swings open, the narrow run of a corridor, the sliver between a sofa arm and the wall, or the space beside a desk where a palm’s fronds would be in someone’s face all day. You get the full vertical presence without surrendering the floor area.
About the Name
Dracaena marginata — the Madagascar dragon tree, now botanically reclassified as Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia — takes its name from the coloured margin running along each leaf edge. The standard form carries a fine red or burgundy edge. The ‘Green’ form used here has that edge in green rather than red, giving a cleaner, calmer silhouette that reads as pure architecture rather than as a colour accent. If you want the plant to sit quietly in a neutral scheme, green is the version to choose.
Two Reasons Artificial Wins Here
1. Toxicity. Real dracaena contains saponins and is toxic to cats and dogs — it’s one of the more commonly reported houseplant poisonings, and cats in particular are drawn to the long, grass-like leaves. This version carries no such risk, which makes it a standing choice for pet owners, families, clinics and childcare centres.
2. Leaf tips. Real dracaena is notorious for browning leaf tips. It’s sensitive to fluoride and salts in treated tap water, and Singapore’s air-conditioned interiors dry the foliage further. The result is a plant that looks handsome for a year and then develops crisped brown tips on every leaf that no amount of trimming fully hides. This holds its colour indefinitely.
It also removes the usual problems: no leaf drop around the base, no soil gnats, no light requirement, and no yellowing lower foliage as the trunk lengthens.
Construction & Detail
- Textured woody trunk with the ridged, scarred surface a real dracaena develops as lower leaves drop away
- Tiered crowns at staggered heights along the trunk, replicating natural growth rather than a single tuft on a pole
- Individually formed leaves with a natural arch and taper, in a matte finish
- Wire-cored leaves that can be lifted, arched and separated to open out each crown
- Weighted base pot for stability — important on a tall plant with a narrow base
Where It Works
- Narrow gaps and alcoves — the primary use, and where nothing else this tall will fit
- Beside desks and workstations — height without fronds in anyone’s face; part of our office artificial plant programme
- Corridors and circulation space — greenery that doesn’t narrow the walkway
- Beside or behind sofas — filling the vertical gap between seat back and wall
- Hotel rooms and serviced apartments — a tall plant in a compact footprint
- Clinics, childcare and eldercare — greenery with no toxicity, pollen or soil
- Retail and F&B — vertical accent that doesn’t eat into trading floor area
- Sheltered balconies and covered walkways — away from prolonged direct sun and driving rain
Styling Notes
Open the crowns. The leaves ship compressed. Lift and separate them within each tier so the foliage fountains outward rather than sitting in a bundle. This is the difference between a dragon tree and a feather duster on a stick.
Let the trunk show. Don’t crowd the base with other plants or pull the crowns downward. The visible bare trunk between tiers is the whole point of this plant’s silhouette.
Pot it up. A tall, narrow planter suits the proportions far better than a wide bowl — 25–30cm diameter with some height to it. Browse our planter range.
Dress the base with moss, bark chips or river pebbles to hide the artificial soil.
Pair with something broad. Set it beside a broadleaf plant rather than another fine-leaved one — the contrast between narrow blades and broad leaves is what makes a grouping look designed.
Care & Longevity
Wipe or dust every few weeks. A cool-setting hairdryer is the quickest way to clear dust from between narrow leaves. Avoid oil-based furniture sprays, which attract dust and dull the matte finish. Kept indoors, expect years of service with no colour change.
Outdoor Use
Suitable for sheltered semi-outdoor positions such as covered balconies, verandas and roofed walkways. Prolonged direct sun and heavy rain shorten the life of any artificial foliage, so fully exposed positions aren’t recommended. Ask about UV-stabilised outdoor-grade options for open-air projects.
