Artificial Coleus Hanging Plant — One-Sided (Flat Back)
Vivid green, pink and deep purple leaves in a single trailing foliage — coleus is one of the most dramatically coloured plants used in decorative planting, and unlike most “colourful” foliage, its vibrancy isn’t down to white variegation patches. Coleus produces genuine pigments — anthocyanins for the reds and purples, chlorophyll for the green — simultaneously across the same leaf, which is why the colouring reads as painted rather than patchy.
What “One-Sided” Means
A standard hanging plant is built in the round — foliage projecting evenly in every direction. A one-sided plant is built flat on the back and full on the front, so it sits flush against a wall, a green wall frame, a shelf edge or a planter rim with no gap and no crushed foliage. It also tiles neatly against neighbouring units — the difference between a green wall that reads as continuous and one that reads as separate plants bolted to a board. If you’re mounting to a vertical surface, one-sided is correct; if the back will be visible — hanging from a ceiling hook, for instance — a full-round plant suits better.
Why Real Coleus Loses Its Colour Indoors
Real coleus needs strong, consistent light to hold its multicoloured pigmentation — in shade or under typical indoor lighting, the vivid pinks and purples fade and the plant gradually reverts toward plain green. That makes it a poor match for the low-light corners and green wall positions where people actually want bold colour. This artificial version holds the full palette permanently, in any light level.
Worth knowing too: real coleus contains essential oils that are a mild stomach irritant to cats and dogs if chewed. This version carries no such risk.
Where It’s Used
- Green walls and vertical gardens — a genuine colour anchor among green foliage varieties; see our green wall service
- Planter and trough skirting — draped over the rim for a colourful edge
- Shelf and cabinet edges — trailing colour down the face of a unit
- Events and weddings — backdrop walls and photo-wall infill; see our wedding décor range
Installation Notes
Overlap, don’t abut. Overlap each unit by 15–20% so foliage from one breaks the line of the next.
Use coleus as a colour accent. Mix it in among plainer green varieties rather than repeating it alone — our range includes fittonia, podocarpus, caladium, peperomia and firmoss, all built to the same flat-back specification.
Fix through the base with cable ties, wire or staples — not adhesive, which fails in Singapore humidity.
Care
Dust every few months with a soft brush or a cool-setting hairdryer. No pollen and nothing to water.
Outdoor Use
Suitable for sheltered semi-outdoor positions such as covered walkways and balconies. For exposed outdoor walls, ask about UV-stabilised outdoor-grade foliage.
